I have been wearing corrective lenses since I was 10 years old. On November 2014 I started working for the Refractive Laser team at Moorfields Private. I have been observing patients that are having Refractive surgery every day for the last two years. They all look a bit nervous, scared and often quite anxious. When the surgery is finished and they are able to see the clock that we have hanging on the wall and tell us the time, every patient looks smiley, happy and some even cry! That’s the beauty of the Refractive laser correction. That is what made me take the decision to have my eyes done.
I chose Proff. David Gartry. I have known him for two years, he is not only one of the most knowledgeable, professional and skilful eye surgeons I have met but also his outcomes are excellent. I felt very safe with him.
After the consultation and all of the tests performed by his wonderful staff we decided to go ahead with LASEK. Many people are afraid of Lasek. However, it is easier to do and safer than Lasik. The only bad point is that I had to put lots of drops during the first few days and it is blurry during the first stage but don’t be afraid it only takes 4 days to start enjoying your new vision.
The surgery went fantastically well, the refractive team is superb, they will teach you how to administer the drops and are with you throughout the journey.
It has been 6 months since then. My vision outcomes couldn’t be better and I can see 6/5 on the Vision acuity chart. It is wonderful to say how much my life has changed since then. I am very grateful to Proff. David Gartry, his staff and all the Moorfields Private team.
After considerable research into prospective eye surgery to improve my vision , one surgeon’s name kept coming up again and again for sheer excellence and best results and that surgeon is Professor David Gartry. From the very first moment I attended a consultation at the David Gartry Eye Clinic at 46 Wimpole Street , I knew I was in the safest and most professional of hands.
All the eye tests were carried out with enormous attention to detail and Professor Garty explained to me very thoroughly the expected procedures and what I might expect during the surgery and the after care that would be available to me should I require it As a 64 year old man,I had become ever more dependent on wearing stronger and stronger prescription varifocal glasses. Reading and the enjoyment of all things visual was less enjoyable , you could say life was being seen through a foggy gloom.
However after the totally painless surgery and a few settling days, I realised that something very special had been given back to me, yes pristine clear eyesight. I was totally unprepared for the tremendous results that this surgery would deliver. I now achieve unaided vision of 20/20 for distance. The world that I am now able to see through new implant lenses is brighter and more colourful than I ever realised. Its quite simply ‘ fantastic ” and no more glasses !!!

Excellent outcome – I now have 20/20 vision. The whole process was very straightforward, Professor Gartry’s team were very professional and put me at ease. The surgery was quick and painless and I cannot fault the aftercare. I have experienced none of the common side effects such as dry eyes or problems with vision at night. I would highly recommend this treatment.
Excellent treatment and follow-up. My right eye has better than 20-20 vision and my left eye around 20-20. I have been offered additional treatment of my left eye but have decided to wait until the end of my 2yr post operative period and review. My eye sight in my left eye is very good but not quite as good as my right, making further surgery not obvious.
Fantastically wonderful. I was way off the scale in terms of prescription, something like -25 and -15. Now I can see perfectly to read with one eye and as to long distance with the other. It is simply wonderful.
Vision: Perfect! I have gone to 0, and the clarity, ability to focus, and night vision are all incredibly good. I feel fine hiking/climbing/driving without any restriction even at night. Recovery: Recovery was ok. I didn’t have any complaints but I also had no complications. Appointments/tests: I would say it has been positive. I think the main hesitation in getting lasik is fear of a medical procedure. It may be helpful to offer more information about the day of the surgery as well as more broader general information about the history of lasik, the clinic, the optometrists and Dr. Gartry.I found a lot of the information online, but I also found a lot of mis-information online and it is difficult to distinguish between the two. While the info that you have–the pdf online–is helpful I would be OK with a more technical and detailed discussion of Lasik even if I could only understand part of it. While researching I still found it difficult to differentiate between providers based on patient success, laser accuracy or the clinics ability to embrace the best technology and ultimately ended up choosing based on reputation and the doctor I felt comfortable with.
Surgery: My surgery did not go as planned and took two days rather than one day as expected. After completing one eye Dr. Gartry called the procedure off as I was unable to fully relax my eye muscles. This, at the time, was incredibly exasperating. While I respect and appreciate his decision, there may have been some steps along the way that could have prevented it and allowed it to be better. The first thing I mentioned to the optometrist was that I was very nervous, and it was the first thing I mentioned when entering the operating room. It is a very strange and uncomfortable setting–giant machines and everyone in sterile scrubs–which when combined with the serious nature of the procedure make relaxing very difficult. A pre-screen for nervous patients could help identify patients like me who may have trouble getting through the procedure in one go.
If I had been planning to do one eye at a time, had been given Vicodin, or had been able to acclimate to the operating room/procedure more slowly it may have been a more peaceful experience. While the surgery was ultimately successful it was a very complicated and emotionally trying weekend. Dr.Gartry to his credit was able to fit me in on Monday rather than waiting the full week and I am grateful for his efforts.
Costs: I found it difficult to choose between places based on the costs. A breakdown of where the cost of lasik goes would be incredibly helpful to the average person researching LASEK and trying to differentiate between the costs of different clinics. Everything else was great! Lasik has greatly improved my quality of life and I am very thankful for the clinic.
I had LASIK Eye surgery by Prof. Gartry, and am delighted with the results. The service from start to finish was faultless. Prof Gartry and his colleagues made me feel at ease and relaxed at what can be a daunting experience, and I would definitely recommend to anyone to have their surgery here.
Retreatment procedure involving relift of old flap made 15 years previously at another provider. Had thought long and hard about having retreatment and opted for Prof Gartry and team. Options including pros and cons comprehensively discussed – went and thought about it for a few months, no pressure to proceed. Very professional service. Slightly longer healing process than first time attributable to relift. Early anxieties dealt with promptly and reassuringly – Prof Gartry and team very accessible. Now 4 months down the line vision pretty much settled and seeing much better than before. Very pleased overall.
